Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, June 19, 2014) - The Richmond Kickers (7-1-6, 27 points) return to USL PRO action this Sunday, June 22 when they travel to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (1-7-5, 8 points). Kickoff is slated for 3:00 p.m. live from Highmark Stadium on YouTube.com/RichmondKickers.
Overall, the Kickers hold a 15-8-8 record over the Riverhounds, with the rivalry dating back to 1999 when the two franchises competed in the USL First Division. The Kickers and the Riverhounds close out a three-game series this Sunday, having met twice to open the season at City Stadium in April.
First, the Kickers upended their northern rivals 3-1 in their regular season home opener on April 5 when forward Michael Seaton opened scoring in the first half with midfielder Kyle Porter doubling the lead after the break. Pittsburgh forward Collins John pulled a goal back with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation but Porter buried his second goal of the night in stoppage time to send the visitors home empty handed.
Two weeks later, the two clubs met for the second time when the Kickers rallied for a 2-2 draw on April 19. Former Kickers midfielder and Richmond native Brian Ownby opened scoring and Jhonny Arteaga converted a second half penalty kick to take a 2-0 advantage before Porter and Kickers forward Matthew Delicate tallied a pair of late goals to preserve the point at City Stadium.
Both the Kickers and the Riverhounds are coming off U.S. Open Cup losses, falling to Major League Soccer Sides New England Revolution and Chicago Fire, respectively. In regular season action, the Kickers are looking to rebound after conceding an early lead for a 2-2 draw against Wilmington, while Pittsburgh battled Harrisburg to a scoreless draw last weekend.
