Battery Heads to Charlotte

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery heads to Charlotte, NC on Saturday night for a 7:00 PM USL PRO match versus the Charlotte Eagles. This is the first of two meetings between the teams in 2014 with the return fixture set for Saturday, July 12 at Blackbaud Stadium. The game will be broadcast locally on Sports Radio 1450 AM and via www.charlestonbattery.com.

The Charleston Battery (4-5-4) enters the game in 8th position in the USL PRO standings 6 points ahead of the Charlotte Eagles (3-8-1) who are in 13th place.

The Battery defeated Los Angeles Galaxy II 3-0 last Saturday night with goals from Colin Falvey, Dane Kelly and Heviel Cordoves. Goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper faced four shots but did not have to make a save en route to his league-leading fifth shut-out of the season.

The Charlotte Eagles lost 1-0 to the Orange County Blues in their last match played on Friday night at Queens University Stadium in Charlotte. Substitute forward Jiovanni Santana scored the game winner in the 80th minute.

In 2013 the Battery played Charlotte twice losing 1-0 in Charlotte and then earning a 2-2 tie in the second match.

Charlotte advanced to the post-season and defeated Harrisburg and Richmond en route to the USL PRO Championship game where they lost 7-4 to Orlando City SC.

Charleston Battery and Charlotte Eagles are among the oldest soccer franchises in the US each playing their 22nd season. The Eagles have experienced considerable success with playoff runs in 16 of their last 21 seasons, eight trips to the finals, and two USL Championships. Charlotte is coached by Mark Steffens who is in his 18th season with the team.
