Richmond versus Charleston
This weekend's encounter marks the first match between the two teams this season, as they embark on a home-and-away series. The Battery will become a familiar foe over the next month with the Kickers playing the top side four times in their next six outings. Prior to the 2010 campaign, the Battery realigned with the USL Second Division after 13 seasons with the top flight. The rivalry between the two clubs will be renewed as the Kickers and the Battery have not met since August 20, 2005, resulting in a 1-1 draw at Charleston. The overall series is deadlocked at 16-16-4.
Last Saturday saw the Kickers (3-2-3) suffer a home defeat to the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, 3-1. Forward Matthew Delicâte was responsible for Richmond's sole tally. A Charlotte tie ensured the defending champions remain in sole possession of second place. Meanwhile, table leaders Charleston (6-1-2) relied on another last minute surge in order to come away with a result. A double from Lamar Neagle helped erase a two goal deficit against Real Maryland and provide the home team with a point.
Players to Watch
Kickers: Forward Matthew Delicâte (#7) continues to dominate the league on a weekly basis. The Virginia Commonwealth University graduate has found the back of the net seven times in his last eight appearances. Along with leading the league in goals, he leads in points as well. The rock steady play of midfielder, Mike Burke (#19) should not go unnoticed. The Kickers veteran has played outstanding in his past few games. One of the best set-up men in the business, Burke has snagged USL Team of the Week honors several times this season. Three-time USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year, Ronnie Pascale (#22) should see a return to action this weekend. Pascale has been extremely reliable between the posts all season long.
Battery: Following his two goal haul from last weekend, forward Lamar Neagle (#4) has been in good form. The 22-year-old is second in the league with five goals to his name. Defender Michael Zaher (#20) doubles as an offensive threat. Zaher picked up an assist last game, giving him two for the season along with goal. Forward Tommy Heinemann (#9) helps complete a deadly offensive attack, the Battery lead the league with 18 goals scored. The towering 6'4" Heinemann provides a large target in the box. He has three goals and an assist thus far.
