Richmond Kickers News Release
HARRISBURG, PA - The Richmond Kickers battled the Harrisburg City Islanders to a 1-1 draw on a pitch devastated by non-stop rain Saturday night. With his missed penalty and another goal annulled, Kickers' midfielder George Davis IV avenged Brett Jankouskas' second half goal with a stoppage time equalizer, to salvage the much-needed point on the road.
Scoreless through the first half, the Kickers nearly broke the ice in the 17th minute when Anthony Grant intercepted the ball at the right touchline and switched it to Michael Callahan in the midfield. The Kickers' captain picked out Yudai Imura at the top of the box, who twisted in the air and volleyed a lateral pass to Jason Yeisley at the far post but Harrisburg goalkeeper Nick Noble threw himself into the line of fire to smother the shot from point blank range.
Weathering the City Islanders offensive pressure late in the first half, the Kickers earned the chance to take the lead again after the break when Davis drew a foul in a midair collision with Dante Leverock in the box. Davis stepped up for the resulting penalty kick but could not capitalize on the golden opportunity as his low, right-footed shot pinged off the upright just before the hour mark.
Four minutes later, the City Islanders claimed the advantage when Craig Foster settled a long ball at the right edge of the box and slotted a driven ball through traffic where a heavily marked Jankouskas redirected it with his back to goal just inside the near post.
Desperate for the equalizer with less than 20 minutes remaining, Kickers defender Sascha Görres' 30-yard curling free kick was cleared out to Davis stationed at the top of the 18 but his volley to the far corner was called back due to an offside call in the six yard box.
Later, Callahan lifted a 20-yard free kick over the defensive wall but it dipped just over the crossbar two minutes before Collin Martin collected the ball and chipped it to Matthew Delicate at the penalty spot but his header under pressure glanced just wide.
Then, with seconds remaining and the playoffs on the line, Kickers goalkeeper Travis Worra launched a long ball deep into Harrisburg territory. Delicate headed it down for Martin who eluded defenders to the top right corner of the box before serving an outswinging cross to the far post where Davis buried a blistering header into the far corner to keep their postseason hopes alive.
The Kickers return to City Stadium on Wednesday, September 16 to host Toronto FC II at 7:00 p.m. in the regular season finale. Oktoberfest, presented by Draper Aden and Metzger Bar & Butchery, starts at 5:30 p.m. with live music, authentic German food and over a dozen craft beers on tap. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.
