Charleston, NC (September 12, 2015) - For just the second time, Louisville City FC (14-7-6, 48 points) suffered a second straight USL loss. Two second half goals from the Charleston Battery (11-6-10, 43 points) sent the Eastern Conference's second best team home with their seventh loss.
The first half was a possession battle between the two clubs. Louisville City and Charleston traded chances early with fluid play by both teams until they reached the final third. It was a half filled with headers sent just wide, and stellar defensive play. After 45 minutes both teams were scoreless. It was the first time since a 1-0 loss to the Charlotte Independence on May 2nd that Lou City has seen a nil-nil scoreline at the break.
Things got a little chippy between the clubs in the second half, and Louisville's Aodhan Quinn was given a yellow card for shoving a Charleston player away from the ball. It gives Quinn his fifth yellow card of the season, meaning he will be suspended for Saturday's Kings Cup finale in Saint Louis.
Conor Shanosky was given a yellow in the 63rd minute for a foul on the edge of the penalty box. Justin Portillo stepped up and smashed the shot from 18-yards out. The ball deflected off Tarek Morad past a helpless Greg Ranjitsingh, who got his first USL start on Saturday, to open the scoring on Saturday night.
Ranjitsingh kept Louisville in the game in the 77th minute when a shot from 15-yards out was drilled on frame. The Louisville keeper got a hand on it to send it out for a Charleston corner kick.
Four minutes later, after being awarded a free kick with a questionable foul call, Charleston doubled their lead. The Battery's leading scorer, Dane Kelly, got a head on the in-swinging ball on the far post. The last four goals Louisville has conceded have come via set pieces.
With a two-seed and a bye in the 2015 USL playoffs already locked up, Louisville will try to capture the first ever Kings Cup on Saturday versus Saint Louis FC in Saint Louis. The 8:30 PM EST kickoff at Worldwide Technology Park will be the final regular season match for Louisville City FC.
