Looking to win its 80th game for the first time in franchise history, the Keys did not register a hit until the eighth inning but just fell short falling to Kinston 2-1 in the series opener. The game was the first in the final regular season series in Kinston in the Carolina League. The Indians walked off winners in the contest.
Down 1-0 in the eighth inning the Keys were still hitless. Indians starter Marty Popham threw four shutout innings before he left after being struck by a Manny Machado line drive on his pitching arm. Indians reliever Giovanny Soto worked a hitless two innings and RHP Trey Haley kept the Keys without a base hit in the seventh inning.
But CF Miguel Abreu lined a soft single into center field and then with one down scored on C Brian Ward's line drive double to right-center field. The game was knotted at 1-apiece.
Kinston threatened with two men on and no outs in the eighth inning when reliever Ashur Tolliver shut the door. He retired three consecutive batters to keep the game tied.
But The Indians rallied in the ninth. SS Casey Frawley lined a single to center field on a 1-2 pitch to lead off the inning. LF Justin Toole laid down a bunt and off the hill Tolliver fired late to second base. Everybody was safe. After C Roberto Perez was hit by a pitch while trying to bunt the outfield came in. Pinch hitter Tyler Cannon drove the ball over Abreu's head in center to end the game.
The Keys continue its final road trip of the 2011 regular season Wednesday, August 31st at 6:30 p.m.. RHP Ryan Berry makes his 2011 Frederick debut as coverage will begin 20-minutes prior to first pitch on 1450-AM The Source and wthu.org.
