Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Jake Odorizzi was honored as the Wilmington Blue Rocks' Pitcher of the Year, while Rey Navarro was named the Blue Crew's Player of The Year by the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday afternoon.
Odorizzi was acquired as part of the six-player trade with the Milwaukee Brewers that included former Blue Rock and American League Cy Young Award winner Zack Greinke during the offseason. The right-hander went 5-4 with a 2.87 earned run average in 15 starts for the Blue Rocks before a midseason promotion to Northwest Arkansas. Odorizzi has combined for 151 strikeouts in 140.0 innings pitched this season.
Navarro, who will turn 22 on December 22, batted .285 with 41 RBIs and 34 runs scored in 72 games on the Riverfront before a promotion to Double-A. After struggling offensively last season in Wilmington, Navarro opened the 2011 campaign on a seven-game hitting streak and never looked back. He batted .416 in the month of April and showed some pop before his promotion adding 17 doubles, seven triples and eight home runs as a Blue Crewer.
Former Blue Rocks Anthony Seratelli and Will Smith took home the same awards at Double-A Northwest Arkansas, while Wilmington alum Johnny Giavotella was honored for his work at Triple-A before getting promoted to the Majors earlier this month. Former Blue Crewer Luis Mendoza, who pitched for the Rocks when they were affiliated with the Boston Red Sox, won the Royals' Triple-A Pitcher of the Year honors, while current Blue Rocks reliever Andrew Stueve was recognized for his earlier work with the Surprise Royals.
A majority of the players are expected to be at Kauffman Stadium for Futures Night on Friday, September 16, where they will take part in an autograph session and be honored in an on-field presentation prior to the Royals game against the White Sox.
The current Rocks continue their final homestand of the 2011 season tonight at 6:35 p.m. against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Broadcast coverage begins at 6:05 p.m. when studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
