Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - The Frederick Keys (18-26) scored 10 unanswered runs over the final four innings but fell short in a 13-11 loss to the Salem Red Sox (22-20) on Tuesday night. In the contest, Chris Clare reached base five times and fell a double shy of the cycle.
Salem started the scoring with three runs in the second. Roldani Baldwin led off with a home run, and he was followed by back-to-back singles from Tyler Hill and Jordan Wren. Hill would then score when a Chris Madera ground ball went through the legs of Keys second baseman Preston Palmeiro. Jordan Procyshen capped off the inning with an RBI single.
The Keys would get a run back in the bottom of the third. Jomar Reyes led off with a walk and advanced to second on a T.J. Nichting single. Following a double play, Clare plated Reyes with a triple to right field to make it 3-1 Salem.
The Red Sox would score six more times in the third inning. Jerry Downs and Baldwin walked, and the bases would become loaded on a Hill single. After Keys starter Jhon Peluffo retired the next two men, he walked Procyshen to bring in a run. Travis Seabrooke then came in and walked Brett Netzer before allowing a grand slam to C.J. Chatham, pushing the Red Sox lead to 9-1.
In the fourth, Salem scored three more times. Downs singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Hill then singled in downs, and Wren and Madera walked to load the bases. Sebrooke then walked Procyshen for a second time with the bases loaded before Netzer hit a sacrifice fly, making it 12-1.
The score remained 12-1 until the sixth. After Reyes and Nichting were retired, Yojhan Quevedo kept the inning alive with a single. Clare followed that with a two-run home run, and Levy singled. He then scored on a Ryan McKenna double which reduced the Red Sox lead to 12-4.
Frederick added another run in the seventh on a single and an error before adding four more in the eighth. Clare began the inning with a single, and Stuart Levy was hit by a pitch. McKenna then reached on an error that allowed Clare to score. Two batters later, Palmeiro cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right center field. It extended his hitting streak to 14 games, and made it a 12-9 game.
The Red Sox scored another run in the ninth. Netzer doubled, and Chatham walked. Bobby Dalbec then reached on an error to load the bases. Tyler Erwin entered the game and hit Downs with a pitch to score Netzer.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Keys put the winning run on base. Quevedo reached on an error, and Clare walked. A single from Levy loaded the bases, and McKenna drove in Quevedo with a single. Billingsley then walked with the bases loaded to make it 13-11, but that was as close as the Keys would get. Palmeiro struck out before Wilson Garcia popped out to end the game.
Taking the loss, Peluffo (2-2) allowed seven runs (six earned) over 2.2 innings. He walked four and struck out two. Bryan Mata (2-2) earned the win for Salem. Over five innings, he allowed just one run on four hits. Matthew Gorst picked up his sixth save by recording the final two outs. In his second Carolina League appearance, Zach Muckenhirn pitched 3.2 scoreless innings and struck out six.
The two teams continue their series on Wednesday night. Left-hander Alex Wells (1-3, 4.10) makes the start for the Keys. He will be opposed by Red Sox southpaw Enmanuel De Jesus (0-0, --). First pitched is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App.
