Burlington Bees News Release

Alex Keudell delivered a Burlington Bees season-high eight innings, allowing one run, in a 4-1 win over the Lake County Captains on Saturday night at Community Field. It was the Bees first win at home since April 9th.

The Bees (10-14) go as their pitching goes and on Saturday night, Alex Keudell put on a show. The right-hander went eight strong innings, allowing one run on six hits and a walk. He tied Ryan Crowley for a Bees season-high of eight strikeouts.

The Captains brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the Bees pitching was too clutch for the Captains. Keudell put two men on in the eighth, but struck out Logan Vick looking to end the inning. Jairo Diaz, who picked up his fifth save, put two men on with one out, but struck out Leonardo Castillo and got Anthony Santander to ground out to end the game.

Keudell (3-1) was stellar from the start, allowing only two hits and a walk in his first five innings. In the sixth, Logan Vick singled home Jorge Martinez with two outs to tie the game at 1-1.

Burlington got on the board first thanks to one of four errors commited by the Captains (8-19). Sherman Johnson led off the inning by reaching on an error by Erik Gonzalez. The following batter, Wade Hinkle, doubled home Johnson. The Bees had runners at first and third with no outs in the inning, but did not score any more in the frame.

The score was tied at 1-1 until the seventh when the Captains defense fell apart again. Andrew Ray walked and with one out, advanced to second on a single by Kyle Johnson. Pedro Toribio followed with a single to score Ray. The throw home to get Ray was late and Eric Hasse tried to catch Toribio advancing on the throw, but he threw the ball into centerfield, allowing Johnson to score. Toribio went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. Only one of the three runs against Michael Peoples (1-1) was earned.

The Bees will take on the Captains in the second game of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m. Brandon Love will oppose Luis Dejesus.
