Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - With their season-high fifth consecutive victory, the Kane County Cougars drew back to an even record for the first time since the season began as they defeated the Dayton Dragons, 6-1, on Saturday night in front of 10,697 fans at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
Oliver Zapata put the Cougars (13-13) on the board as he cracked an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the third. One inning later, the Cougars grabbed another tally as Jeimer Candelario walked and scored on a double play groundball off the bat of Willson Contreras.
Felix Pena (1-0) worked well with the advantage as he lasted seven innings while holding the Dragons (9-19) to a run on four hits. Pena fanned seven and had his only blemish in the top of the sixth when Seth Mejias-Brean cracked a two-out RBI single.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars blew the game open with Pin-Chieh Chen starting the rally by singling. Dan Vogelbach and Rock Shoulders drew walks to load the bases with Contreras coming through by cracking a three-run double down the third base line. Bijan Rademacher brought Contreras to the dish with a run-scoring double of his own.
Justin Amlung recorded the final six outs after replacing Pena in the eighth. Pedro Diaz (0-2) started for the Dragons and gave up the first two tallies while Joel Bender was tagged for three in his 2.1 innings. Ben Klimesh allowed a run in his 1.1 frames.
The Cougars and Dragons will continue their three-game set on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 first pitch at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Left-hander Michael Heesch (0-2) will start for the Cougars against right-hander Drew Cisco (2-1). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
