Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Silver Hawks topped the Kernels 6-5 in 11 innings on Saturday night at Coveleski Stadium. The Kernels held a 5-2 lead going into the 9th inning, but the Silver Hawks tallied a trio of runs in the bottom of the 9th inning before Ryan Court's RBI single in the 11th gave South Bend game one of the series.
Late-inning walks doomed the Kernels. South Bend scored four runs combined in the 9th and 11th innings, and all men had reached on base on balls. Six of the seven walks the Kernels issued on the night came in the last three innings.
A leadoff walk in the 11th inning led to the winning run for the Silver Hawks. Kevin Medrano drew the free pass and went to 2nd base on a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch by Tim Atherton sent Medrano to 3rd base and forced the Kernels to bring the infield in with one out. Ryan Court's RBI single snuck past the drawn-in infield as shortstop Jorge Polanco dove to his left, and South Bend won 6-5.
Tim Atherton (1-1) took the loss in relief, going 2 innings and allowing 1 run on 2 hits. Josh Burris allowed 3 runs over 1 inning.
With the Kernels leading 5-2 going into the bottom of the 9th inning, three walks issued by Josh Burris loaded the bases for the Silver Hawks. With two outs in the inning and Fidel Pena at 3rd base, Socrates Brito laid down a RBI bunt single to tie the game 5-5.

The Kernels and Silver Hawks traded a pair of runs in the 1st inning, and the game went to the 2nd inning tied 2-2. A Jorge Polanco RBI triple down the right field line that scored Niko Goodrum and a Dalton Hicks RBI single to left that plated Polanco put the Kernels in front. South Bend's Ryan Court tied the game with a 2-RBI single up the middle.
