Cougars Top Dragons 6-1 on Saturday

Geneva, Ill.-Kane County starting pitcher Felix Pena allowed only one run over seven innings and Willson Contreras broke open a one-run game with a three-run double in the seventh inning as the Cougars defeated the Dayton Dragons 6-1 on Saturday night. The Dragons fell to 9-19 with the loss. Kane County is 13-13 and winners of five straight.

Kane County got the scoring started in the third inning on a solo home run to the opposite field by Oliver Zapata, his second of the year, to make it 1-0. They added another run in the fourth to go ahead 2-0.

The Dragons cut the deficit in half in the sixth. Zach Vincej singled and went to second on Jeff Gelalich's sacrifice. Jesse Winker walked. After Nick O'Shea struck out, Seth Mejias-Brean delivered a base hit to right field to bring in Vincej from second and make it 2-1. Junior Arias grounded out to second to strand the tying run at third.

Kane County answered with four runs in the seventh to push their lead to 6-1. The Cougars loaded the bases with two outs on an infield single and a pair of walks. Dragons reliever Ben Klimesh came on to replace Joel Bender. Contreras hit a hard ground ball over the third base bag down the left field line to drive in three runs and make it 5-1. Bijan Rademacher followed with a double to right center to close out the scoring.

The Dragons finished with seven hits. Vincej was 2 for 4 with a single and a double. Winker was 1 for 2 with two walks.

Dragons starting pitcher Pedro Diaz (0-2) worked the first four and one-third innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and one strikeout to suffer the loss. Joel Bender replaced Diaz and pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the fifth before leaving with two outs in the seventh. He worked two and one-third innings, allowing three hits and three runs with three walks and one strikeout. Klimesh pitched one and one-third innings, allowing two hits and a run with a strikeout.

The Dragons and Cougars meet in game two of the series on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. EDT. Drew Cisco (2-1, 3.00) will start for Dayton against Kane County's Michael Heesch (0-2, 4.26).
