Yakima Valley Pippins News Release

KELOWNA, BC - The Yakima Valley Pippins recorded their second shutout of the year, blanking the Kelowna Falcons, 6-0, in the opener of a three-game series at Elks Stadium.

Beau Kerns worked the first 6 2/3 innings of Tuesday's contest, overcoming 8 hits and a walks, while striking out five, to pick up the win in his first start of the summer.

"Getting base runners on is going to happen throughout the game," said Kerns. "You've just gotta battle from there. It's all just mentality from there."

The Pippins (10-8 overall, 7-6 West Coast League) backed him up with two runs in the 2nd inning on a two-run home run by Vince Fernandez, who also doubled in the game. A Reid Martinez RBI single in the 3rd gave Kerns and the Pippins a 3-0 cushion, before adding two runs in the 5th and another run in the 6th to put the game away.

While the Falcons (6-10) outhit Yakima Valley 12-8, Kerns and the Pippins continued to extinguish base runners over the course of the night. In total, the Pippins recorded one pick off, caught one runner stealing and turned two double plays, including one induced by reliever Austin Hansen in the bottom of the 8th to end a bases loaded, 1-out jam. The Falcons stranded 11 runners over the course of the game, as they were shut out for the first time this season.

The Pippins have won six of their last eight games and will look for their fourth straight series win Wednesday night against the Falcons at 6:35 p.m.
