Kernels Score Two Runs in the Ninth, Rally to Top Quad Cities 4-2

Davenport, IA - After scoring just one run across the first seven innings Sunday afternoon, the Kernels rallied to score a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to come from behind and knock off Quad Cities 4-2.

After Quad Cities walked off the Kernels with a two-run home run Saturday, the Kernels got on the board first with a long ball Sunday. To lead off the second inning, Jorel Ortega crushed a solo shot over the wall in left field to give Cedar Rapids the early 1-0 edge.

In the bottom of the inning, however, Quad Cities took its first lead of the day. Two singles and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out for Shervyen Newton, who picked up a bases-loaded walk to even the game at 1-1. A batter later, Eric Kennedy then put the River Bandits ahead with a sac fly to lift Quad Cities up a run at 2-1.

But that was the last run Cedar Rapids pitching would allow the rest of the way. C.J. Culpepper, Alejandro Hidalgo and Jordan Carr combined to finish the game with seven shutout innings, combining to allow just four hits while picking up ten strikeouts.

With the Kernels dominating on the mound, the score remained 2-1 all the way until the top of the eighth inning. With the bases empty and one out, Carson McCusker struck his second home run in as many games, a solo shot to tie it at 2-2.

After a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning, Ortega drew a two-out walk to extend the top of the ninth. With Ortega on first base, Noah Cardenas scored him all the way from first on a double into the left-center field gap to give the Kernels their first lead since the second inning at 3-2. The next batter, Andrew Cossetti, then provided the Kernels with some insurance, scoring Cardenas with an RBI single to double the Cedar Rapids lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, Carr pitched to a scoreless frame to close out the victory for the Kernels and pick up his fourth win of the season.

The win of Cedar Rapids (66-42) finishes off a series split with Quad Cities (47-61) as the Kernels win three of the final four contests. Next week, Cedar Rapids returns home for its penultimate home series of the season, beginning the six-game set with Wisconsin Tuesday at 6:35.
