Kernels Fall to Peoria in Series Opener

Cedar Rapids, IA - Kernels catcher Pat Winkel went 3-for-5 with four RBI to lead an 11-hit effort from the lineup as Cedar Rapids fell 9-7 to the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night. Winkel, Jake Rucker and Alerick Soularie provided multi-hit nights while Seth Gray, Kyler Fedko and Rucker each scored a pair of runs in the loss. Cedar Rapids moves to 55-33, 12-10 in the second half.

After falling behind 3-0 after half of one, the Kernels responded with three of their own in the home half as six straight reached with two down. Rucker blasted an RBI double off the left field wall before Winkel plated a pair with a single laced back up the middle.

A five-run fifth put Peoria ahead 8-3 after three. Cedar Rapids got a run back in the fourth as Fedko singled and scored from first on a Soularie double ripped down the right field line.

Following a Chiefs run in the sixth, the Kernels plated two of their own in the bottom of the seventh on Winkel's second two-run single of the game. Cedar Rapids would chip away further as Gray brought home Fedko with a groundout in the eighth to trim the deficit to two.

Cedar Rapids' bullpen again impressed, allowing a lone run over 6.2 innings of work. Hunter McMahon struck out three while retiring each of the five he faced, Ryan Shreve punched out a pair over 1.1 scoreless while Matt Mullenbach closed things out by retiring four of five batters faced.

Game two of the series is set for 6:35 p.m. CT on Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
