Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cedar Rapids fell to the Burlington, 2-0, in 11 innings on Thursday night. The Kernels concluded a season-long nine-game homestand with a 4-5 record after failing to complete the sweep over Burlington.
Burlington (34-32) avoided the sweep with two runs in the top of the 11th. Trevor Gretzky led off the inning with a single to center, his second hit of the night. Erick Salcedo then replaced Gretzky as a pinch-runner. Jake Yacinich then reached on a Kernels throwing error, giving the Bees runners on first and second. Michael Hermosillo followed Yacinich with an infield bunt single, loading the bases for Burlington. With the Kernels infield all the way in on the grass, Andrew Daniel placed a pop fly in shallow right field between Pat Kelly and Edgar Corcino for an RBI single, scoring Salcedo from third. A Michael Theofanopoulos wild pitch brought in Yacinich, extending the Burlington lead to 2-0.
Nick Gordon led the Kernels in hits for the second straight night with two hits. The 19-year-old finished the night 2-for-3 with two singles, a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt.
Keaton Steele recorded a no-decision on Friday. The right-hander yielded just six hits and struck out seven in a team-high nine innings. Steele's nine shutout innings extends his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 12 1/3.
Tyler Carpenter (1-1) earned the win for Burlington. Carpenter allowed two hits and two walks in two scoreless innings of relief.
Michael Theofanopoulos (1-2) suffered the loss for Cedar Rapids. The southpaw allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out four.
Jake Jewell recorded a no-decision in his first start of the year for Burlington. The right-hander retired the last eight he faced and allowed just two hits in a season-high five innings pitched. Jewell also matched his season-high with seven strikeouts in five scoreless innings.
Alex Klonowski allowed a walk in one scoreless inning of relief for the Bees. Jordan Piche allowed just one walk in two scoreless innings of relief. Eduardo Paredes struck out one in one scoreless inning of relief.
