
Bees' Outlast Kernels in 11, 2-0

(Cedar Rapids-IA)- The Burlington Bees snapped a 25 inning scoreless streak, scoring two runs in the 11th inning, on their way to a 2-0 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night in Cedar Rapids.
The Burlington Bees were looking to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday night. Jake Yacinich led off the game with a single to right field, but was retired on a double play, grounded into by Michael Hermosillo, keeping the Bees off the board in the first inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, Max Murphy reached base after being hit by a pitch and moved to second on a Pat Kelly single to left. Jake Jewell worked his way out of trouble, striking out Rafael Valera, ending the inning.
Jewell went on to throw five shutout innings, allowing just two hits, striking out a season high seven, retiring eight hitters in a row to finish the outing.
Alex Klonowski came on from the bullpen and gave up a lead off single to Nick Gordon, before getting Edgar Corcino to ground into a double play. Klonowski went onto retire Alex Real on the next pitch, keeping the game scoreless after six inning.
With the game still scoreless in the top of the ninth inning, Andrew Daniel laced a two out single to left and then moved to third on a Natanael Delgado single. Zach Houchins lined out to left, stranding the two base runners, keeping the game scoreless.
Kernels' starting pitcher, Keaton Steele threw nin shutout innings, allowing six hits without walking a batter, striking out seven in a no decision.
Trevor Gretzky led off the top of the 11th with a single to center and was then pinch ran for by Erick Salcedo. Jake Yacinich dropped down a sacrifice bunt, reach on an error, putting runners at first and second. The next hitter, Michael Hermosillo, reached on a bunt single, loading the bases with no outs. Andrew Daniel blooped a single to right center, scoring Salcedo, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead. Jake Yacinich then came home to score on a wild pitch, upping the Bees' lead to 2-0.
Cedar Rapids got the lead off man on when Rafael Valera reached on a walk in the bottom of the 11th inning. Tanner English followed with a single. With one out, Edgar Cordino walked, loading the bases. Tyler Carpenter (1-1) was then able to get Alex Real to pop out, and Brett Doe to ground out, ending the ball game, giving Carpenter and the Bees the win, 2-0. Kernels' reliever Michael Theofanopoulos (1-2) was charged with the loss.
The Bees continue their road trip Friday night, starting a three game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits. Keynan Middleton makes the start against Christian Powell for Quad Cities at 7:00, in Davenport.
