West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps struggled to make the most of their opportunities as they fell 4-1 to the Fort Wayne TinCaps Thursday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

Fort Wayne posted three quick runs in the games' first two innings, and all without the benefit of a base hit. Trae Santos drove in a run with a first-inning groundout, Michael Gettys scored on an errant pickoff by West Michigan starter Artie Lewicki, and Jose Ruiz lifted a sacrifice fly in the second to take a 3-0 lead. An error also helped the 'Caps score their only run, when Santos overthrew shortstop Ruddy Giron attempting to start a double-play to score Francisco Contreras to make the score 3-1 in favor of Fort Wayne. Whitecaps reliever Gage Smith allowed a run to score on a pair of throwing errors to give the TinCaps a 4-1 lead, ending the scoring in the ballgame.

Chris Huffman (3-3) earned his third win with five innings in his start in place of Fort Wayne lefty Brad Wieck, who missed the game with an illness. Lewicki (0-2) suffered his second loss in as many starts by giving up three runs in five innings. Colby Blueberg pitched a scoreless ninth to record his seventh save of the season. The Whitecaps fall to 32-34, while the TinCaps improve to 29-36 on the season.
