Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels surrendered a season-high six homers and 14 runs in a 14-10 loss to the Peoria Chiefs in a wild Saturday evening contest. Yunior Severino and Seth Gray each had three-high nights as Jeferson Morales, Aaron Sabato and Severino each homered in the loss. The Kernels are now 55-34, 12-11 in the second half.

Severino and Morales each clubbed solo shots in the second and third, but Cedar Rapids saw Peoria build an 8-2 lead through four and a half.

Wander Javier tripled to open the home half of the fifth, later scoring on a Will Holland sacrifice fly. Jon Olsen dealt a 1-2-3 fifth then Matthew Swain retired six of seven with a pair of strikeouts to hold the Chiefs at bay.

Alerick Soularie walked then Seth Gray singled to lead off the sixth before Severino hammered a two-run triple off the center field wall. The Kernels would cut their deficit to a lone run with another pair of runs in the seventh as Soularie doubled home Morales and Gray poked an RBI single to left two pitches later, making it an 8-7 game.

Peoria would add three runs in the eighth and ninth to put the game out of reach. Morales plated Severino on a sacrifice fly in the eighth then Sabato blasted a two-run bomb to center with the Kernels down to their final strike an inning later, but the damage had been done.

The series finale is set for 2:05 p.m. CT on Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
