Lake County Captains News Release
(LANSING, MI) - The Lake County Captains (47-40) dropped a game for the first time since July 9, a 7-1 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts (35-54) on a sunny Saturday night at Jackson Field.
The Captains scored the first run of this game continuing where they left off after yesterday's 18-6 win. Petey Halpin led off the inning with a double to left field and was plated by Gabriel Rodriguez's single up the middle. It was the lone Lake County run.
Following a 12 pitch 1-2-3 first inning from Captains' starter Aaron Davenport, Lansing knotted up the score in the second. Denzel Clarke reached on a single, moved to second after a groundout and was plated by an infield single from Joshwan Wright following a throwing error from third base.
The Lugnuts took the lead in the third. Following a lead-off walk and a drop third strike, runners were on the corners. Max Muncy would steal second and forced a throw from home to second that jumped into center and scored Max Muncy from third base. A Jack Winkler RBI single made it 3-1.
Lake County's best chance for runs came in the top of the fifth inning. Zac Fascia roped a single to left field with two outs. Korey Holland then stepped up and lifted a ball to deep right. The ball bounced off the top of the wall and then ricochet over the tall wall in centerfield for a ground-rule double. Fascia broke home, but of course had to return. A groundout back to the mound ended the chance and kept the Captains off the board.
Lansing posted three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. Tyler Soderstrom smacked an RBI single that plated run number four and pushed Davenport out of the contest. Jack Winkler then faced Davis Sharpe and lined a pitch over the left field wall. A sacrifice fly to center in the sixth made it 7-1.
The Captains left five on base in the final three innings and went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position overall.
Tomorrow Sunday, July 24 will be the rubber game between the Captains and Lugnuts. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m.
