Kernels Beat Lake County 4-3

Lake County Captains News Release


(Cedar Rapids, IA) Alex Swim extended hits hitting streak to 13 games with a two run single in the bottom of the first and the Kernels beat the Captains 4-3. The Kernels sent eight men to the plate and used three hits and two walks to plate the two early runs. Cedar Rapids clinched the three game series with the win.

The Kernels added a run in the bottom half of the fourth inning. J.D. Williams walked and then stole second base. With two outs Engleb Vielma singled home Williams and the score was 3-0 Kernels. Cedar Rapids added another in the bottom of the sixth inning. A leadoff triple by Jason Kanzler and a wild pitch made the score 4-0 after six innings.

Lake County scored their only run of the ball game in the top of the eighth inning. Claudio Bautista tripled to left field and then scored on a ground out from Clint Frazier and the score was 4-1 Cedar Rapids.

The Captains added two runs in the top of the ninth inning to cut the lead to one run. With two outs and two runners in scoring position. Jorge Martinez lined a single to center field and both runners scored. The next hitter, Ivan Castillo lined a single to left field, but Martinez rounded second base and was thrown out trying to retreat to the bag. The game was over and Cedar Rapids won 4-3.

RHP Dace Kime (5-11) started the game for the Captains and took the loss. Kime pitched four and two thirds innings and allowed three runs on five hits and four walks. Kime struck out four. Wander Beras pitched one and one third innings of relief and allowed one earned run on one hit. Beras struck out one and tossed one wild pitch. Trevor Frank pitched a scoreless seventh inning of relief with two strikeouts. Justin Brantley pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Captains.

RHP Kohl Stewart (3-5) started for Cedar Rapids and earned the win. Stewart pitched five innings and allowed four hits and fanned three. Stewart did not allow a run. Jared Wilson pitched two shutout innings of relief for Cedar Rapids. Hudson Boyd pitched one inning and allowed one earned run on one hit. Nick Burdi (1) earned his first save of the season.

The Captains will remain on the road for a six-game road trip to the state of Iowa. On Friday, Lake County will take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Captains will send LHP Luis Lugo (5-7, 5.56) to the mound and the Kernels will counter with RHP Aaron Slegers (6-6, 4.89). First Pitch is at 7:35 PM from Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
