July 17, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Beloit, Wisc.-Phillip Ervin belted a two-run home run and Robert Ramirez collected three hits including a run-scoring double to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 6-3 victory over the Beloit Snappers on Thursday night. The Dragons have won the first two games of their six-game Western Division road trip.
The Dragons built a 4-0 lead over the first five innings, held off a Beloit comeback bid as the Snappers cut their deficit to 4-3 in the sixth, and then scored two in the ninth to close out the scoring. The game ended with the tying run at the plate in the Beloit ninth inning.
The Dragons got the scoring started in the top of the first when Carlton Daal walked with one out, stole second, and scored on Ramirez's double to the right field corner. The Dragons scored on an error in the second to go ahead 2-0, and Ervin followed a bunt single by Daal in the fifth with a long home run to left field to make it 4-0. It was Ervin's fifth homer of the year.
Beloit scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth and then added two in the sixth to make it 4-3. Joel Bender pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Dragons and Zack Weiss worked a perfect eighth.
The Dragons took advantage of two Beloit errors in the ninth to add two more runs, pushing their lead to 6-3. Weiss issued two walks in the bottom of the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs, but he struck out B.J. Boyd looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Sal Romano (6-9) earned the win. He worked the first five and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) with one walk and four strikeouts. Weiss picked up his first save, going two scoreless innings without allowing a hit. He walked two and struck out three.
The Dragons finished with eight hits. Ramirez had three and Ervin collected two.
The Dragons (12-14) meet the Snappers (7-19) again on Friday at 8:00 p.m. (EDT) in the final game of the series. Dan Langfield (2-1, 2.29) will start for the Dragons against Beloit's Junior Mendez (2-5, 4.16).
The Dragons open a three-game series in Appleton, Wisconsin against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Saturday. The next home game is Wednesday, July 23 vs. Quad Cities at Fifth Third Field.
