
Kernels avoid sweep with 5-4 win over Wisconsin

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kernels took an early lead, and the bullpen got out of tough situations late in the game to hold off and edge the Timber Rattlers 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Timber Rattlers had the tying and potential go-ahead runs on in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings but were unable to plate any runs as the Kernels held on to the one run lead. Stephen Tromblee struck out Max Walla to end the 7th inning. In the 8th inning, with runners at 2nd and 3rd base Ty Kelley stuck out Ben McMahan and Tyler Roberts to end the inning. In the 9th inning with runners at the corners and one out, Kelley struck out Walla and got Jason Rogers to ground to third and end the game.
Kelley picked up his fourth save, going two innings and allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out three and walked one. Tromblee went 0.2 inning and allowed no runs on no hits while striking out one. Joe Melioris pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one run on four hits.
Eswarlin Jimenez (1-2) started for the Kernels and picked up the win, going five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked four.
The Kernels scored three times with two outs in the 2nd inning. Abel Baker's RBI double to right field scored Matt Scioscia, giving the Kernels the early lead. Wendell Soto then followed with a 2-run home run to right field, pushing the Kernels lead to 3-0.
Wisconsin scored a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning, cutting the Kernels lead to 3-1. With runners at the corners and no outs, Yadiel Rivera scored as the Kernels turned a 4-6-3 double play.
The Rattlers then tied the game 3-3 in the 3rd inning on a 2-run home run by Brandon Macias. It was his second home run of the series.
In the 4th inning the Kernels took a 5-3 lead. Scioscia led off the inning with a solo home run to left field. Chevy Clarke was then hit by a pitch and he later scored on a RBI single by Soto.
The Rattlers cut the Kernels lead to 5-4 in the 6th inning on McMahan's RBI triple that scored Greg Hopkins.
Kevin Shackelford (1-2) started for the Rattlers and went four innings. He allowed five runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one. Michael Strong pitched three scoreless innings. Stephen Peterson pitched two scoreless innings.
The Kernels begin a road commuter series at Burlington on Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
