Soldotna, AK. - An early third-period goal was the difference Friday night, as the Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the Wenatchee Wild 2-1 at the Soldotna Sports Center.
After a scoreless first period in which the Wild out shot Kenai River 13-4, the Brown Bears opened the scoring on a power play goal by Nathan Colwell. Jake Bushey assisted at 11:03, for a 1-0 Kenai River lead. Wenatchee responded just over a minute later, as Troy Loggins (Huntington Beach, California) scored. Omar Mullan (Dearborn, Michigan) and Alex Bontje (Nobleton, Ontario) drew the assists at 12:25, tying the game 1-1.
In the third period, the Brown Bears scored a rebound goal by Albin Karlsson. Assists went to Gustav Berglund and Eric Purcell. The power play goal, scored at 4:01, gave Kenai River a 2-1 lead. The advantage would hold up through the rest of the period and the Brown Bears would hold on for the 2-1 win. "That's a tough one to lose" said Wenatchee Wild Head Coach Bliss Littler. "This one's definitely a tough one to lose. In general, making their goalie the number one star, thought we played well, need to find a way to get out of here with a couple of points tomorrow."
The Wild out shot Kenai River 43-22. Chase Perry (Andover, Minnesota) stopped 20 shots for Wenatchee, while Zach Quinn made 42 saves for the Brown Bears. The Wild was 0-for-2 on the power play and 1-of-3 on the penalty kill.
Wenatchee is now 16-16-3; Kenai River is 19-16-3.
The Wild continues their road trip with one more game at Kenai River tomorrow (Saturday), before moving on to Fairbanks for three games next Thursday (January 16th), Friday (January 17th) and Saturday (January 18th), before returning home to face Bismarck on Friday and Saturday, January 24th and 25th.
