Amarillo Bulls News Release
AMARILLO, TX - A four goal second period lifted the Amarillo Bulls to their sixth win in a row on Friday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
Mike Davis and Tyler Gernhofer each scored twice as the Bulls doubled the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees 4-2. The victory extended the Bulls lead to eight points in the North American Hockey League's South Division over the Topeka Road Runners and the Wichita Falls Wildcats who have the weekend off.
The difference in the game was a dominating 2nd period by the Bulls, their best in a long time, capitalizing on turnovers and strong play inside the Killer Bees' zone. Amarillo has gone 6-1-1 on the nine game home stand with one final game to come tomorrow (Saturday) before four consecutive on the road.
It was a good physical and well played opening 20 minutes between the Bulls and the Killer Bees. It took near the end of the stanza before Rio Grande Valley opened the scoring on a power play goal with a shot from the blue line. Tim Moore and Roman Ammirato with early scoring chances on Nick Schmit for the Bulls, but they were both turned aside. Rio Grande Valley outshot the Bulls 11-10.
You couldn't have asked for a better second period for the Bulls with 18 shots and four goals. It was a suffocating style of play and first-to-the-puck work ethic that was rewarding to the home team.
Mike Davis tied the game 1-1 when he deflected home a terrific pass from Brendan McGuire near the midway mark of the stanza. Brendan Vetter also added a helper. Three minutes later, forward Tyler Gernhofer made his return to the line-up pay off when he ripped a wrist shot in the top corner from Stuart Pomeroy and Mike Davis. Pomeroy set up the play with a shot from the point that was dug out along the boards by Davis, who fired the puck over to the waiting Gernhofer.
The power play went to work for the Bulls with the next two goals. Mike Davis notched his second of the game when he converted a feed from Brady Ferguson at 15:16. Kyler Gattelaro also assisted on the goal. Just over three minutes later, some crisp passing led to Gernhofer getting his second when he scored into an empty net from Roman Ammirato and Mike Davis.
The Bulls defense went to work in the third period and despite giving up a second power play goal, the Killer Bees offense was held in check. That goal by Rio Grande Valley was scored nearly three minutes into the frame. Paul Berrafato made some great saves to preserve the win.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Killer Bees 11-10 in the third and 39-28 in the game.
There were just seven total power plays in the contest with the Bulls going 2 for 3 and the Killer Bees were 2 for 4.
Box Score Amarillo 4 Rio Grande Valley 2
