Austin Bruins News Release
After an early stalemate, the Austin Bruins (24-11-1) dominated the final 40 minutes in a convincing 3-1 win over the Minot Minotauros (14-20-3) Saturday to complete the weekend sweep at Riverside Arena in Austin.
Similar to Friday night s first period, Saturday night s opening frame was mostly anti-climactic, with only 11 combined shots and few scoring chances. The best scoring chance came when the Bruins Guillaume Leclerc (Franois, France) fed a quick centering pass from behind the net to Jay Dickman (Shoreview, MN) stationed out front, but Dickman s one-timer was turned away by Minot goaltender Merrick Madsen (Acton, CA). There were no penalties between the two teams in what was a scoreless first period.
The Bruins were given three power-plays in the second period, but the only goal of the frame came at even-strength, when Kody Reuter (Sioux City, IA) found Luke Dietsch (St. Paul, MN) on a 2-on-1 for Dietsch s eighth goal of the season. Austin outshot Minot 14-4 in the middle frame and carried a power-play into the third.
Austin couldn t convert on that man-advantage, but scored their second goal shortly after the Minot penalty expired to make it 2-0. On the goal, Leclerc was jamming at a couple of rebounds at the edge of the crease and the puck eventually bounced onto the stick of Casey Jerry (Hudson, WI), who lifted it over the pad of Madsen. The Minotauros goaltender was later called for a delay-of-game penalty for lifting the puck out of play, and Lucas Kohls (Forest Lake, MN) made him pay on the ensuing power-play, as Kohls fired a wrist shot into the top corner from the point. Minot spoiled Nick Lehr s (Roseville, MN) shutout bid, when Michael Bigelbach (Red Wing, MN) scored with 15 seconds left, but the Bruins finished the 3-1 win, and Lehr earned his 22nd victory of the season.
Next weekend, the Bruins welcome a different Central Division opponent to Riverside Arena as the Aberdeen Wings travel to Austin for the first time this season. Friday and Saturday s games will start at 7:05pm and can be seen on fasthockey.com. Saturday s game will also air on the radio on 1480AM KAUS.
