Lynn, MA â Behind a record setting performance from starter John Kelly, the North Shore Spirit upended the Bangor Lumberjacks 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 4,575 at the New Fraser Field.
Kelly (8-3) pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing six hits while striking out a team-record 16 batters. Isaac Pavlik (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season for Bangor, despite striking out nine in just 5 2/3 innings of work.
The Spirit opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Mike Granger started the inning with a ringing double down the line in left. After a Nelson Teilon basehit, Vic Davilla delivered an RBI single to center that put North Shore out in front 1-0.
North Shore would tack on four more runs in the sixth. After Travis Oglesby walked and Frank Charles was hit by a pitch, Brian Macchi doubled home a pair with a shot to the gap in right-center. Yuri Sanchez would knock home Macchi one batter later with a single back up the box.
Macchi finished the game 2-3 with a run scored and two RBI's. Kelly's 16 strikeouts was one shy of the league record of 17 set in 1998 by Byron Tribe of the Massachusetts Mad Dogs. The crowd of 4,575 was a new Spirit attendance record.
