New Haven County Cutters News Release

(West Haven, CT– August 4th, 2004) The New Haven County Cutters received 8 and 1/3 solid innings from starter Skip Wiley on Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Aces 3-2 on Camp Day to salvage the final game of their three game series.

After the two teams combined for thirty-one runs in the first two games of the series, the finale featured a pitcher's duel between Wiley and Aces starter Alex Pena.

The game didn't start out well for Wiley and the Cutters as with one out in the first, Aces third basemen J.P. Schmidt, hit a solo home run over the right field wall to give the Aces a 1-0 lead.

The Cutters answered back in the second, loading the bases with one out and scoring a run on Billy Rich's sacrifice fly that brought home Adam Shorsher to tie the game at one.

The score remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. After retiring the first two batters of the inning and ten straight overall, Pena gave up an infield single to Billy Rich. The Cutters' centerfielder then took second on his first stolen base of the year putting a runner in scoring position for shortstop Jose Mateo. Mateo came up with a clutch double down the left field line scoring Rich and giving New Haven a 2-1 lead.

Pena left after seven, allowing two runs on four hits and struck out seven. After Wiley worked a scoreless eighth, the Cutters added an insurance run against the Aces' bullpen. Hector Lebron led off the inning with a single off of lefty Carlos Figueroa. Then facing right hander Aaron Kirkland, Aaron Fera hit a RBI triple off the scoreboard in centerfield scoring Lebron and extending the lead to 3-1.

Wiley took the mound to start the ninth, but with one out gave up a solo home run to Yohanny Valera that brought the Aces to within one at 3-2. Following a walk to the next batter Eddie Gerald, Wiley was lifted in favor of Shane Waroff. The New Haven close quickly got Mike Davis to hit into a 6-3 double play to end the game.

Wiley (4-6) went a season high 8 and 1/3 innings allowing two runs on six hits and fanned four. Waroff picked up his twelfth save of the year and Alex Pena (3-7) took the loss.

The Cutters hit the road for a three game series with the New Jersey Jackals starting on Thursday before returning home to host the Brockton Rox. The three game home stand begins on Monday August 9th at 7:05pm. For more information call the Cutters Box Office at (203) 777-5636 or visit the website at www.cuttersbaseball.com.
