ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Blues announced today that goaltending coach Keith Allain was named as an assistant coach by USA Hockey for the United States Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. Team USA, the defending silver medallist, will begin the preliminary round of the tournament on Feb. 15 vs. Latvia. Allain, who will attend next week's U.S. Olympic Orientation Camp in Colorado Springs -- along with Blues players Keith Tkachuk, Doug Weight and Andy Roach -- has a long history of international assignments with USA Hockey.

"Keith's knowledge of the U.S. program will be a tremendous asset to us," said Team USA General Manager Don Waddell. "We're extremely pleased to have him as part of the staff."

He most recently served as an assistant coach under Carolina Hurricanes head coach Peter Laviolette at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Championship in Vienna, Austria. Laviolette will reprise his role as head coach with the 2006 U.S. Olympic Men's Team.

"I'm thrilled beyond words to be working with this group as we head toward Torino," said Allain. "It is a unique honor and a rare opportunity to be able to represent your country and compete for an Olympic medal. I'm looking forward to the challenge." Allain joined St. Louis in 1998 and under his guidance Blues netminders surrendered the fewest goals in the NHL in 1999-2000, claiming the William M. Jennings Trophy. That season the Blues captured the President's Trophy for the

best regular-season record in the league. Allain is also currently an advisor to the Blues' American Hockey League affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen. His professional coaching experience includes serving as a scout for the NHL's Nashville Predators in 1997-98 and a four-year stint (1993-94 through 1996-97 seasons) as an assistant coach for the Washington Capitals. Allain's extensive international coaching career includes serving as an assistant coach for the United States team that captured the championship of the inaugural World Cup of Hockey 1996 while registering a 6-1-0 overall mark. He returned to the World Cup of Hockey with the U.S. in 2004 as goaltending coach. Allain was also an assistant coach for the 1992 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, which placed

fourth in Albertville, France with a 5-2-1 record. His involvement with USA Hockey includes guiding the U.S. as head coach at the 2001 and 2002 IIHF World Junior Championships.
