KEENE, N.H. - The Keene Swamp Bats upended the Vermont Mountaineers, 5-2, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Northern Division action at Alumni Field on Saturday evening.

With the loss and Laconia win, Vermont falls to 14-12 on the season and sits in second place in the Northern Division standings, two and one-half games behind the division-leading Muskrats. Keene improves to 8-18 on the summer.

With the score 1-1 entering the bottom of the third inning, the Swamp Bats offense batted home three runs to take a 4-1 lead, an advantage they would hold onto.

Rightfielder Ryan Karl (Towaco, N.J. / Cornell) drew a one out walk and reached second on a passed ball. Shortstop Garrett Christman (Noblesville, Ind. / Butler) followed with an RBI single to score Karl and make it 2-1 Keene. Two batters later, catcher Connor Fitzsimons (Bristol, Conn. / Central Connecticut State) connected on a two out two-run homerun to make it 4-1.

Each team scored one more run in the fifth to conclude the scoring for the evening at 5-2.

Vermont scored one run in the second inning, when third baseman Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) hit a sacrifice fly to score Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) and knot the score at one.

In the fifth, Mountaineers' designated hitter Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) led off with a double. He scored two batters later on an RBI groundout to the right side by Parenty.

Vermont starter Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y. / Le Moyne) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season. The righthander tossed four and one-third innings and gave up five runs (all earned) on five hits and one walk. He struck out one.

Reliever Kyle Gauthier (Lynn, Mass. / Hartford) earned the win for Keene. Gauthier dealt three innings in relief and allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk. He struck out one and improved to 3-1 on the summer.

Swamp Bats' reliever Paul Covelle (Medford, Mass. / Franklin Pierce) grabbed his third save of the year, pitching a scoreless ninth in which he walked two and struck out two. He left the bases loaded with Mountaineers in the final frame.

Vermont will next play on Sunday evening, when the squad returns to Central Vermont for a four-game home stand.
