Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Keene, NH - Brett DeLoach hit a go ahead three run homerun off Liam Rafferty in the bottom on the seventh inning as Keene would go on to win 5-2 over the Vermont Mountaineers in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Saturday. The loss snaps the Mountaineers five game win streak and keeps the Swamp Bats at the top of the Western Division.

Both starting pitchers dueled early before Colby May hit a two run blast off Vermont's Matt Whitehouse in the bottom of the fourth inning. Whitehouse (Diamond Bar, CA/UC Irvine) labored through six innings walking three and giving up those two runs on six hits while striking out three as well.

Whitehouse would be let off the hook in the top of the sixth when Rob Kelly launched a monster game tying two run shot off Keene's Jeff Thompson to reset the score at 2-2. For Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Saint Anslem) it was his team leading third homer as he now leads the Mountaineers with twelve runs batted in.

Going into the seventh, Liam Rafferty came on in relief and retired the first two batters he faced before giving up a single to Alex Chittenden. The next batter, Kevin Brown, hit a sharp ground ball to second base that Brett Johnson bobbled into right field for his first error of the night allowing Chittenden to advance to third. After a full count walk was issued to load the bases, DeLoach hit his sixth homer of the season to break the tie.

Kyle Gehrs and Eddie Medina would combine to throw two perfect innings and ensure a Swamp Bats victory who snapped a three game losing skid to Vermont.

The runs given up by Rafferty (Westminster, MA/Sacred Heart) were all unearned due to the error. The righty was charged with the loss pitching one inning giving up three unearned runs on two hits. Gehrs picked up the win tossing two perfect innings in relief while Medina earned his third save of the year.

Vermont (16-12) is back home tomorrow night as they take on the Eastern Division leading Newport Gulls at Montpelier Recreation Field at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday night. You can hear all the action live on ESPN 1240, WSKI and online at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
