Keene defeats Sanford to set up first round

Sanford, ME- the Sanford Mainers (24-18) sent Jake Marks (0-2) to the mound tonight against the Keene Swamp Bats (21-21). Marks went 3 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, just 1 earned run with 3 strikeouts. Jeff Singer (Monmouth) was called on in relief and allowed 1 run on 4 hits with 1 walk and 1 strikeout as the Mainers fall to close out the regular season 3-to-0.

The Swamp bats got the lead for good in the top of the 2nd inning with 2 runs on 3 hits, all with 2 outs on the board. Keene used a two out single from Alex Liquori, a single from Bret Dennis, and a single from Patrick McGrath to drive in Liquori. McGrath stole second base and the throw from Kevin Stypulkowski (Univ. of Maine) bounced into center field scoring Stephen Smith from third to make it 2-to-0 after 2 innings.

The Mainers were held off the board despite 7 hits and leaving 10 on base against another stellar pitching performance by Keene, in the bottom of the 2nd the Mainers had two reach base, Matthew Pagano (Marist) singled to left and Sam Stauble (Univ. of Maine) singled to left to put two runners on but the Moose left them on base.

Keene immediately went to the bullpen after getting the lead and put in Darick Hall. Hall has pitched not 7.1 innings against the Mainers and has not given up a run. Hall did the same throwing 5.1 innings of shutout ball allowing 4 hits with 5 strikeouts. Matt Clancy was called on to work the 8th and one out of the 9th and retired the Mainers without allowing a hit, with 1 strikeout.

Ben Criscuolo earned his 4th save of the season against this Mainers club and is tied with Cam Hatch (St. Edwards) with 8 saves on the year for second in the NECBL, finishing off a 3-to-0 win for Keene who has taken four in a row against the Mainers to win the series 4-to-2.

The Mainers finish 10-11 at Goodall Park this season and were the second best road team during the regular season with a 14-7 win-loss record.

Drake Parker (Vanderbilt) finishes with the best regular season batting average on the team at .304 and second base on-base percentage at .402. Kendall Patrick leads the Mainers with an on-base percentage at.421, an OPS of .758 and hit-by-pitch with 13 which was one shy of tying the franchise record for a season of 14 set in 2011 by Marlon Calbi. The Mainers were 7 walks shy of the team record 175 walks set in 2011 with 168.

The pitching staff ERA records the best ever completed by a Mainers team at 2.70 beating out the 2003 team's 2.72. The Moose were just four wins shy of the all-time Mainers best season record of 28-13 from back in 2003 with this year's final regular season record of 24-18. The 24 wins are the most under Manager Aaron Izaryk in his 6 seasons as head coach.

Sanford will throw first pitch against the Keene Swamp Bats inside Goodall Park on Monday (8/4) at 6:30 pm to begin the 2014 NECBL Playoffs for the Moose, Nick Poore (2-0, 1.80 ERA) gets the start!
