Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club is proud to announce two Hitmen defencemen have been selected in the first round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
Karl Alzner was taken fifth overall by the Washington Capitals, while Alex Plante was drafted 15th overall by the Edmonton Oilers.
Alzner just completed his third season with the Hitmen and posted a career high in goals with eight and points with 47.
Plante has played two seasons in Calgary and is also coming off a career season with 38 points in 58 games.
This marks the third time in franchise history the Hitmen have had at least two players selected in the first round. In 2004 three players were taken (Andrew Ladd-4th Carolina, Jeff Schultz-27th Washington, Andy Rogers-30th Tampa Bay), while in 1999 two Hitmen were picked (Pavel Brendl-4th NY Rangers, Kris Beech-7th Washington).
"It's a real credit to GM and Head Coach Kelly Kisio along with Head Scout Brad Whelen to be able to find these players, said Hitmen Assistant Coach Dave Lowry. "It also shows the quality program we have here in Calgary where we're about developing players and today we were rewarded for that."
