May 10, 2008 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Kansas City Brigade News Release
Kansas City, MO - D Bryant led the Kansas City Brigade (2-8) to a 59-43 win over the Columbus Destroyers (2-8) in front of 12,736 inside Sprint Center. Kansas City would never trail while improving to 3-0 all-time versus Columbus.
Bryant completed his second straight game without throwing an interception. Four different receivers caught touchdown passes from Bryant including offensive lineman Jamarr Ward. Ward, who is listed at 6-4 and 375 pounds, recorded his first touchdown of the season when he slipped off the line and was wide open for a four yard touchdown reception. The score was Ward's 11th touchdown during his six seasons in the AFL.
The Kansas City defense struck early when they recovered a Columbus fumble on the second play from scrimmage. Denario Smalls jumped on the football to give Kansas City their first possession of the game. On the ensuing play D Bryant found Ces'are Manning for a 22 yard touchdown reception and a 7-0 Kansas City lead. Ces'are Manning, Jerel Myers, and Mike Horacek each caught one touchdown pass from the rookie quarterback from Duke.
Derek Lee, who came into the game fourth in receiving yards, was held to 73 receiving yards in the game. Lee added two touchdown but both were late in the fourth quarter when the game was already out of reach. Quarterback Matt Nagy threw for 294 yards and five touchdowns, but the fifth ranked passer in the AFL committed three costly turnovers.
For the first time in the 2008 season the Kansas City Brigade played up to their potential. The defense forced three turnovers; the offense only coughed the ball up once. The special teams were excellent as Peter Martinez was perfect on extra points (8-8) and field goal attempts (1-1). Jerel Myers added a 56 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
Kansas City (2-8) welcomes Kenny McEntyre and the Orlando Predators (7-4) to Sprint Center on Sunday May 18th. Kansas City plays Orlando for the first time since 2006 when the Brigade were members of the Southern Division in the National Conference.
Tune into ESPN Russell Athletic Monday Night Football when the Philadelphia Soul (9-1) take on the Georgia Force (4-5). Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 ET on ESPN2.
