Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Kannapolis, N.C. - September 3, 2015) - The West Virginia Power fell to the Kannapolis Intimidators 10-6 on Thursday night at Intimidators Stadium. With the loss, the Power fell behind in the season set against the White Sox affiliate with five wins and six losses.
The Power got out to an early 1-0 lead against Intimidators starter Kelvis Valerio in the second inning. After back-to-back one-out walks by Jerrick Suiter and Pablo Reyes, respectively, Suiter scored on an RBI single from Tyler Filliben.
Kannapolis scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 advantage. Mason Robbins laced a two-run triple and scored on an RBI single from John Ziznewski. Ziznewski scored the fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch from Power starter Colten Brewer.
West Virginia came to within two thanks to Filliben's second RBI of the night and the Power scored four times in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead. After a pitch to lead off the Power fifth hit Kevin Newman, Kevin Kramer singled to put two men on. A sac bunt moved both men into scoring position. With two outs, Suiter's ground ball was bobbled by the Kannapolis shortstop, allowing Newman to score and the miscue made it a one-run game. Pablo Reyes lashed a two-run double to give the Power the lead and Filliben followed with a bloop single to right to make it 6-4.
After retiring 15 consecutive batters, Brewer faltered in the seventh inning after surrendering two runs to the Intimidators to tie the game at six.
The Intimidators reclaimed their lead in the eighth inning with four runs against Power reliever Jared Lakind. With the bases loaded and one out, Toby Thomas drew a walk to make it 7-6. Robbins followed with a two-run single up the middle. A passed ball by Taylor Gushue resulted in the last run of the inning.
West Virginia attempted a rally in the ninth inning by loading the bases with two outs. However, with the tying run at the plate, the Power failed to convert on the opportunity.
Lakind (2-1) took the loss with four runs on two hits over one inning of work while Kannapolis reliever Connor Walsh (2-3) earned the victory with four shutout innings. Brewer worked seven innings and surrendered six runs on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
West Virginia (46-20, 83-52) continues the series with Kannapolis (29-36, 64-70) on Friday night at Intimidators Stadium. RHP Austin Coley (15-6, 3.77) toes the rubber for West Virginia against Kannapolis RHP Luis Martinez (4-13, 5.35).
