Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (August 19, 2015) - Sam Howard led the Tourists to their second consecutive shutout win as Asheville beat Kannapolis, 6-0, on Wednesday at McCormick Field. Kannapolis (24-28 Second Half, 59-62) has not scored in its last 18 innings, the offense's longest scoreless stretch of the season.
Howard (9-9) spun 7.0 scoreless innings to earn the win, working around two hits and a walk while striking out eight. Grahamm Wiest and Jerry Vasto each spun a scoreless relief inning to close the game for the Tourists.
Luis Martinez opened with five scoreless innings for Kannapolis, but the right-hander got into trouble in the sixth. With one out, he walked Forrest Wall and plunked Shane Hoelscher before leaving the game after being evaluated by Athletic Trainer James Kruk.
David Trexler took over with two on and one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and induced a would-be double-play ball. Second baseman Toby Thomas flipped to shortstop Ryan Leonards for one out, but Leonards' throw skipped to first base and popped out of Cody Daily's glove, allowing Forrest Wall to score on an error for a 1-0 lead.
Asheville added five runs off Trexler in the eighth. Wall blasted an RBI-double off the top of the 42-feet-tall wall in right-center field, and Yonanthan Daza legged out an infield single that scored two runs before Roberto Ramos emptied the base paths with a bomb over the right-field wall for a 6-0 lead.
Martinez (4-12) took the loss. Asheville won the series, 2-games-to-1 and finished the season-series by taking 11 of 14 against Kannapolis.
The game started after a season-long rain delay of one hour, 43 minutes.
The Intimidators open a four-game series in Savannah on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Jose Brito (1-1, 3.63 ERA) takes the mound for Kannapolis against the Sand Gnats' RHP Casey Delgado (6-3, 3.32 ERA). Kannapolis returns to Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System on Tuesday, August 25, to open a four-game home stand.
