Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
Kannapolis, NC - For the second straight night, the Kannapolis Intimidators could not match the explosiveness of the Rome Braves offense, losing 8-4 Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,002 fans. Kannapolis (16-20, 48-58) lost the last two games and three of four games in the series to Rome (18-18, 47-59).
Just like Friday night, the Intimidators jumped out to an early lead as Brandon Allen doubled in Sergio Miranda in the bottom of the first. The lead increased to 4-1 after three innings and it could have been more if not for Rome catcher Phillip Britton's effort to hold on to the baseball as he got barreled over at home plate by Allen. At 6'2" and 235 pounds, Allen is no small force, especially when he's coming at you full-speed ahead. But, Britton held on to the baseball. The play drew a reaction from both clubs, causing the benches and bullpens to empty out onto the field. Everything calmed down rather quickly and order was restored without any incident.
By the time the fifth inning rolled around, the Intimidators still led 4-1. With Mike Rocco on the hill for his second inning, the Intimidators gave up six runs in the top of the fifth as Rome sent 11 batters to the plate. Four of the runs were earned, as the Braves had four hits in the inning and the Intimidators committed two errors.
The Intimidators struggled to gather much offense after the third inning once again. Friday night, Kannapolis had just one hit in the final six innings. Saturday night, the Intimidators had two hits after the third.
Rome tacked on another run in the eighth on a Danny Brezeale home run off Ryan Rote.
Chris Carter and Francisco Hernandez each had two hits for the Intimidators. John Shelby, Allen, and Hernandez each drove in a run.
Rocco (0-3) took the loss, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits in two innings. It was a bullpen day for the Intimidators as five pitchers threw in the game. Rome threw four pitchers, with Chris Vines (1-0) getting the win with two shutout innings of relief in the fifth and sixth innings.
Rome scored 36 runs on 50 hits in the four-game series, while Kannapolis scored 21 runs on 38 hits. The Intimidators scored five runs on 13 hits in the final two games of the series.
Kannapolis has Sunday off, but will travel to Maryland on the off day with its eyes set on Monday's opening game of a four-game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds. Game time Monday is set for 6:35 pm.
