Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Greensboro, NC- Delmarva used a late four-run rally to defeat Greensboro 4-2, avoiding a four-game sweep and snapping the Grasshoppers' nine-game winning streak.

The Grasshoppers were ahead 2-0 going into the seventh when the Shorebirds started the comeback. Miguel Abreu doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a two-out double to left by David Cash to cut the Greensboro lead in half. Delmarva then scored three in the eighth, with the rally starting with two outs and nobody on. Chris Vinyard worked a walk against reliever Chris Leroux, and Billy Rowell tripled to score pinch runner Pedro Florimon and tie the game at two. Abreu followed with a two-run homerun to left and gave the Shorebirds its first lead of the game. Abreu ended the night 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, and went 7-for-15 in the series. Cash and Danny Figueroa each had two hits for the Shorebirds.

Both starters pitched outstanding but earned no-decisions in another pitcher's duel in this series. Greensboro's Graham Taylor went seven innings and allowed an earned run on seven hits and struck out four. Tim Bascom matched Taylor's effort with six strong innings while allowing only four hits and two runs. Both of Greensboro's runs came in the bottom of fifth inning. Chris Hatcher and Guillermo Martinez started the inning with back-to-back homers to give the Grasshoppers a 2-0 advantage.

While the Grasshoppers bullpen gave up the lead, Delmarva's was almost perfect in three innings of work. Brett Bordes did not allow a hit and walked two in an inning and a third. Luis Lebron retired the last four batters-two on strikeouts-to close out the game and earn his third save.

The Shorebirds head home to start a four-game series against the Kannapolis Intimidators, the first Southern Division team Delmarva will face this season. Greensboro heads to Savannah to start a four-game set with the Sand Gnats.
