Game Rewind
Wednesday, March 20h @ Wheeling Nailers (Wheeling 2-Kalamazoo 1-Shootout)
Wheeling, WV - Just as they did in their previous encounter back on March 3rd, the Wheeling Nailers (29-26-3-8) erased a third period deficit to defeat the Kalamazoo Wings (32-28-4-2), this time with a 2-1 shootout victory at the WesBanco Arena.
Earning his first goal since November 2nd (Vs Cincinnati) Joe Charlebois put the K-Wings ahead 1-0 with a blue-line slap shot for his third-goal of the season 13:25 into the period.
Despite being outshot 14-3 in the second period, the K-Wings kept the Nailers off the scoreboard in the second period to preserve the one-goal advantage.
Wheeling evened the game in the third period with a shorthanded tally from Zack Torquato (3rd) 13:54 into the stanza.
Remained tied until the shootout, where the Nailers outscored the K-Wings 2-1 in the extra session. Wheeling earned goals from Keven Veilleux and the eventual game-winner from Torquato, while Kalamazoo earned their lone goal in the shootout off the stick of Alexandre Grenier.
Friday, March 22nd Vs Toledo Walleye (Evansville 4-Kalamazoo 2)
Kalamazoo, MI - The Toledo Walleye (35-24-5-4) helped their postseason plans and in the process put a damper on the Kalamazoo Wings (32-29-4-2) playoff hopes with a 4-1 victory Friday night at Wings Stadium.
Joey Martin (14th) finished a give-and-go with Willie Coetzee 1:32 into the game to put the Walleye ahead 1-0.
Finding a loose puck midway in the period, Tyler Brenner (10th) scored on rebound to extend Toledo's lead to two goals.
Keeping the pressure in the second period, Willie Coetzee (26th) increased Toledo's lead to three goals by stealing a breakout pass near the left circle and worked his way in the slot for a wrister 14:31 into the period.
Putting the game away in third period, Coetzee (27th) notched his second of the game from an assist from Martin and Trevor Parkes. The assist from Parkes extends his point streak to five games.
Kalamazoo broke up Toledo's shutout bid 14:18 into the period with a goal from Mitch Versteeg (7th).
The loss extends the K-Wings winless streak (0-3-0-1) to four games.
Saturday, March 23rd @ Evansville IceMen (Kalamazoo 5- Evansville 2)
Evansville, IN - The Kalamazoo Wings (33-29-4-2) kept their playoff hopes alive Saturday night by defeating the Evansville IceMen (23-40-2-4) 5-2 at the Ford Center to snap a four-game (0-3-0-1) winless streak.
Scoring on a backhander, Daniel Tetrault gave the IceMen a 1-0 lead 6:27 into the game by notching his 14th goal of the season.
Skating up the right wing, Dustin Cloutier (8th) evened the game at 1-1 scoring the equalizer on a wrist shot midway in the stanza.
Putting on a passing clinic, Alexandre Mallet found Alexandre Grenier (7th) in the slot for a go-ahead goal for the K-Wings 16:42 into the period.
Keeping momentum on their side in the second period, the K-Wings increased their lead to two goals 8:19 into the stanza with a goal from Mitch Versteeg (8th).
Receiving a quick tip pass from Aaron Clarke, Brett Lysak earned his 19th goal of the season with 28 seconds remaining in the period to increase the K-Wings lead to 4-1.
Not to be outdone, Evansville's Austin Madaisky (2nd) completed his own version of beat the clock scoring from the left circle with 1.2 seconds left in the stanza.
Nick Sirota (21st) added some insurance for the K-Wings in the third period, scoring on a rebounder 12:20 into the period.
Sunday, March 24th Vs Wheeling Nailers (Wheeling 3-Kalamazoo 2-Shootout)
Kalamazoo, MI - The Kalamazoo Wings (33-29-4-2) postseason hopes came to an abrupt halt on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Wheeling Nailers (30-28-3-8) at Wings Stadium.
Getting free from a drop pass from Paul Crowder, Chris Barton (21st) skated between the circles to record the lone goal of the period 6:09 into contest to give the Nailers the early advantage.
Killing off a penalty in the second period, Kalamazoo would even the game at 1-1 15:32 into the stanza, as Nick Sirota stole the puck the K-Wings blue line and raced up the ice to beat Scott Darling with a left circle slap shot. The goal was Sirota's 22nd of the season and his third shorthanded; both lead the K-Wings in their respective categories.
Keeping the K-Wings off the scoreboard during a five-on-three power-play midway in the third period, the Nailers gained on their momentum to take the lead 10:19 into the period with a goal from Peter Lenes (11th).
Not going down without a fight, Joe Charlebois (4th) recorded the equalizer six minutes later with a slap shot from between the circles.
The game would be decided in a shootout, where the Nailers outscored the K-Wings 2-0, with Barton and Keven Velleux earning goals for Wheeling.
Fast Forward
The K-Wings will begin the week on Wednesday, March 27th with a 7 p.m. faceoff versus the Evansville IceMen on $5 Pack the House Night. On the season, the K-Wings are 7-3-0-1 versus the IceMen, who begin the week in fifth place in the North Division.
Wrapping up a three-game home stand, as well as the home portion of their schedule, the K-Wings will host the Fort Wayne Komets at 7:30 p.m. on PNC Night and WRKR FANdaonium-Fan Appreciation Night, featuring a FANomenal Friday ($2 Beer, $2 Hot Dogs and $1 Pepsi Products). All fans will receive a FREE K-Wings 2012-13 team poster.
Prior to the game on Friday, the K-Wings will honor the first-ever recipient of Al Genovy Ambassador Award. Following the contest, the K-Wings will host their annual post-season awards ceremony on the ice.
On Saturday, March 30th, Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne will conclude the regular season with a 7:30 p.m. showdown at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On the season, the K-Wings are 7-6-1-0 versus the Komets, who start the week in fourth place in the North Division.

Nearing a Milestone
Forward Tyler Shelast is closing in a personal milestone. The next point for Shelast will be his 100th in his career.
Finding a Scoring Touch
Defenseman Joe Charlebois posted two goals last week to increase this season total to four goals. Prior to this week, Charlebois hadn't scored since November 2nd.
Snapping a Streak
The K-Wings enter the on a three-game home winless streak (0-2-0-1) streak. The three-game streak ties the longest home winless streak for Kalamazoo this season.
The Obscure Stat of the Week
The K-Wings have recorded seven shorthanded goals this season. Three of their shorthanded goals have occurred against the Fort Wayne Komets, the most of any team in the ECHL.
