K-Wings Set Another Record

April 25, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings, proud members of the United Hockey League, announce that goaltender Joel Martin, along with defensemen Greg Labenski and Daniel Carriere have been named to the UHL All-Star Team.

Named to the league's First Team is goaltender Joel Martin. The nomination marks the second straight day Martin has been honored by the league. Yesterday, Martin was selected by the UHL to their All-Rookie Team.

Martin has been a pillar of consistence between the pipes for the K-Wings. In the regular season, Martin led the league in goals against average (2.20), save percentage (0.921) and shutouts (9).

The rookie netminder's success has continued in the postseason, as he leads all playoff goaltenders in goals against average (1.33), save percentage (0.956), shutouts (1) and victories (3).

The Three Hills native becomes the second K-Wings goaltender to be named to the UHL All-Star Team and the first to be selected to the First Team.

Also named to the league's First Team was defenseman Greg Labenski. The veteran defenseman was the anchor of the K-Wings defense, as he led the league with Plus/Minus rating of +54.

Besides stopping other teams from scoring, Labenski was major contributor to the K-Wings offensively; registering 62 points (15 goals, 47 assists).

The accolade for Labenski continues a season of accomplishment, as earlier this month, Greg was selected as the K-Wings' Fifth-Third Bank Defenseman of the Year. Labenski also represented the K-Wings in the 2006 UHL All-Star Classic.

Joining Martin and Labenski on the All-Star Team is Daniel Carriere. The third-year defenseman was selected to the league's Second Team.

Carriere had a record season for the K-Wings, as he set the franchise's UHL record for most points by a defenseman in a single-season (80) and most assists by a defenseman in a single-season (70).

Like Labenski, Carriere's brilliance at the blue-line earned him a trip to the 2006 UHL All-Star Classic.

By having three players on the UHL All-Star Team sets a K-Wings franchise record for representation. The three players are also the most by any team this year.

The K-Wings will be back on the ice this Wednesday (4/26) night, as Kalamazoo continues "Destination: Colonial Cup" against the Motor City Mechanics in Game Four of their Best of Seven Series. Kalamazoo leads the series three games to none.

Fans that want to watch Game Four, can come to the Icehouse Bar and Grille, located in the upper level of The Annex. Face-off from The Garage will be 7:30 p.m.
