Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI - Thirteen was not a lucky number for the Port Huron Icehawks, as their regulation unbeaten streak was halted at 12 with a 4-2 loss to the Kalamazoo Wings at McMorran Place Arena. Pelted by 48 shots, Jason Tapp stole the show, recording a season-high 46 saves to earn his 20th win of the season.
Entering Sunday's contest, the Icehawks had outscored their opponents 83-36 in the first period. However, despite quality scoring chances and out shooting Kalamazoo16-7, Port Huron found themselves trailing after the opening 20 minutes.
Maneuvering behind the Icehawks net, Glenn Detulleo skated towards the right circle and made a perfect backdoor pass to Lucas Drake, who registered his team-tying 24th goal of the season, 14:26 into the period past Port Huron's Ryan Mior.
Continuing to pressure Port Huron in the second, Kalamazoo received goals from Martin Ondrej (2nd) and Justin Cross (7th) to up their lead to 3-0. Earning his first lamp-lighter as a K-Wing, Ondrej finished a give-and-go from Tyler Willis in the infant moments of the second stanza to extend the K-Wings lead. With less than two minutes remaining the frame, Cross recorded the eventual game-winner by lifting a backhander just underneath the cross bar.
Registering on the scoreboard with 13.3 seconds remaining in the second, Port Huron inched closer with a slap shot from between the circles from Nick Lindberg (23rd), who now has burned the Kalamazoo for 13 points (7 goals, 6 assist) in 12 games this season.
Winning a draw in the K-Wings zone in the third period, Bryan Smolinski sent a puck to the left point to Jamie Lovell (12th), who brought the Icehawks back to within a single goal by scoring on a slap shot blast 14:47 remaining in regulation.
Ending the Icehawks comeback bid, Detulleo (23rd) put the nail in Port Huron's coffin recording his 400th career point on an empty-netter to preserve the victory.
