Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks fired 48 shots at the Kalamazoo Wings on Sunday, but could not solve goalie Jason Tapp and fell 4-2 at McMorran Arena.

The K-Wings managed just 18 shots on net in the game, but connected on four of them to hand the Icehawks their first loss in regulation since January 17th and snap a league-high 12 game unbeaten streak for Port Huron.

Despite the loss, the Icehawks (36-17-5-2) hold onto first place in the International Hockey League with a three point lead over the second place Muskegon Lumberjacks, who were idle tonight. The K-Wings (34-25-1-0) remain in fourth place with 69 points and sit ten points out of first.

The Icehawks outshot the K-Wings 32-13 through the first two periods of play, but found themselves with an early deficit. Kalamazoo opened scoring when Lucas Drake netted his 24th goal of the season at 14:26 in the first period. He was assisted by Glenn Detulleo.

The K-Wings managed just six shots on goal in the second period but still scored twice to take a 3-0 lead. The goals were both even strength and scored by Martin Ondrej and Justin Cross. The Icehawks stopped the K-Wings scoring spree when Nick Lindberg scored at 19:46 to put his team on the board. He was assisted by Jason Chafe and Daniel Tetrault.

The Icehawks continued to pepper shots at Tapp in the third period, outshooting their opponent 16-5. Their persistence was rewarded at 14:47 when Jamie Lovell scored to trim Port Huron's deficit to one. Bryan Smolinski and Derek Merlini were credited with the assists. The Icehawks looked to complete their comeback in the game's final six minutes, but could not get the puck past Tapp. Kalamazoo's Detulleo fired the puck into an empty net with 23 seconds left to play to secure his team's victory.

Tapp stood tall and stopped 46 of 48 shots to keep the K-Wings alive. Icehawks goalie Ryan Mior made 10 saves on 13 shots, before being replaced by Larry Sterling at the start of the third period. Sterling stopped all four shots he faced. Both teams were scoreless on the power play in a quiet game that saw just four minor penalties. Port Huron was 0-1 with the man advantage and Kalamazoo was 0-3.
