PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks needed a win on Saturday to remain in first place in the International Hockey League. They got what they were looking for and skated to a 4-1 victory over the Muskegon Lumberjacks at L.C. Walker Arena.
The Icehawks entered the game with a narrow one point lead over the Lumberjacks. With the win, they hold onto their status as the league's top team and improve to 36-16-5-2 with a three point lead over Muskegon (35-17-3-3). They also extend their unbeaten streak to a league high 12 games.
The Icehawks scored four consecutive goals on their way to victory. Nick Lindberg led the way with one goal and two assists and Steve Rymsha registered a goal and an assist.
Port Huron got on the board when Rymsha capitalized on the game's first power play opportunity and landed his 36th goal of the season at 13:41 in the first period. He was assisted by Jamie Carroll and Lindberg.
In the second frame, the Icehawks outshot the Lumberjacks 14-11 and scored twice more to take a two goal lead. Tab Lardner and Ian Turner had the goals for Port Huron. The Icehawks put the game away in the third period when Lindberg scored shorthanded at 14:07.
Muskegon got their first and only goal of the night when Dan Boesser beat goalie Larry Sterling at 17:55 to spoil his bid for the shutout.
The Lumberjacks had the advantage in shots on goal, 33-31. Sterling made 32 saves to earn his 24th win of the season, while Muskegon goalie John Ceci made 27 stops. The Icehawks were 1-4 on the power play and the Lumberjacks were 1-5.
The Icehawks travel return home on Sunday to sink their talons into the Kalamazoo Wings. The game is Scout Night at McMorran Arena. Tickets for kids 14-and-under and seniors 62-and-over are just $5.
