Kingsport Axmen News Release
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (July 20, 2014) - As the 2014 Appalachian League season approaches the halfway mark, the Kingsport Mets are getting on a roll.
The K-Mets beat the Princeton Rays 7-3 on Sunday, posting their third straight win and fourth in the past five games.
Kingsport (13-15) still has some work to do if it wants to repeat as West Division champion, but the K-Mets can do something they haven't done all season if they beat the Rays in Monday's series finale: sweep a series.
Two home runs, a breakthrough night by Ivan Wilson and Andrew Church's best start of the season propelled Kingsport to victory in this one. Wilson homered as part of a 3-for-4 night, crushing the offering from Rays reliever Ruben Paredes deep to center field. It's his fourth home run of the season.
Pedro Perez also went yard, walloping the pitch by Mario Fernandez on a no-doubt shot to left field in the sixth inning. It also scored Eudor Garcia, and erased a 2-1 deficit to put Kingsport ahead for good, at 3-2.
The K-Mets added three insurance runs in the seventh on four hits, then concluded scoring on Wilson's dinger in the eighth.
Church (1-2), the Mets' second round pick in 2013, had his best start of the summer. Church lasted six innings, allowing a pair of unearned runs on five hits-all singles-with a walk and five strikeouts. Church retired the side in order in two of his six innings.
Craig Missigman and Bryce Beeler finished up, as Kingsport secured its 13th win of the 2014 season.
Perez and Oswald Caraballo added two hits apiece for the K-Mets. Caraballo, who reached base safely for the 14th straight game, had a two-run double as part of that pivotal seventh inning.
The concluding chapter in this three-game set begins Monday. First pitch is 7 p.m.
K-METRICS: Wilson had three hits on Sunday. In his previous 10 games, he'd had two hits total.
NOTES: Shortstop Luis Guillorme commited Kingsport's lone error but also made some fabulous plays in the field, most notably when he leaped to snare Manny Sanchez's liner in the ninth inning and rob Sanchez of a base hit. ... Fernandez (1-1) took the loss and was on the hook for five of Kingsport's seven runs. He faced 12 K-Met batters, half of whom got a base hit. ... Kingsport's first run scored on a passed ball on ball four during Vicente Lupo's at-bat, allowing Jose Garcia to streak home. The first 4 1/2 innings had been scoreless. ... Thomas Milone had two hits for Princeton.
