Kingsport Axmen News Release
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (July 19, 2014) - The Kingsport Mets made quick work of the Princeton Rays on Saturday night, needing just 2 hours, 5 minutes to finish a 3-0 shutout in the opener of their three-game Appalachian League series at Hunter Wright Stadium.
Kingsport (12-15) collected its second straight victory, and Yoryi Nuez (4-1) took over the league lead in wins. Nuez has been the pitcher of record in one third of Kingsport's triumphs in 2014, and he was a huge part of Saturday's victory. Nuez went six shutout innings, and didn't allow a hit after the first inning. He posted six strikeouts, including five straight in a run during the second and third innings.
Zach Roseboom worked the seventh and eighth, and Ramon Estevez pitched a spotless ninth to tally his first save since 2012.
Kingsport didn't light up the scoreboard offensively, matching Princeton with six hits. The K-Mets' hits were very timely, however. Kingsport strung together four consecutive two-out singles in the third inning. The first hit, by Leon Canelon, put runners on the corners thanks to Juan Figuera's walk earlier in the inning.
The next three singles by Oswald Caraballo, Eudor Garcia and Luis Ortega each drove in a run and amounted to all the scoring in the game.
Princeton never had a runner advance past second base, even during the first inning when they had three consecutive hits themselves. An out on the basepaths prevented the Rays from scoring; Ivan Wilson's dive to snare a Hector Montes line drive in center field was ruled a trap, but his throw in was relayed to third base to get the runner trying to advance.
Kingsport posted its second shutout of the season. Its first came on July 11-, in a 12-0 win at Elizabethton.
K-METRICS: It's now been 17 straight innings since Kingsport gave up a run. The K-Mets allowed two in the first inning of Thursday's game against Burlington and haven't seen the opposition cross the plate again.
NOTES: Caraballo made a fantastic running catch in foul territory in left field in the eighth inning, even colliding into the home bullpen fence. ... Caraballo also has reached base in 13 consecutive games. ... Garcia had the only multihit game for Kingsport. ... Jose Alonzo (2-1) took the loss for Princeton.
