Winston-Salem Dash News Release

KINSTON, NC (JULY 17, 2011) - Jeremie Tice's two-run home run in the fifth inning was all the Kinston pitching staff needed, as the Indians struck out 17 Dash batters en route to winning the series opener 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. Winston-Salem dropped its second straight game and fell 2.5 games behind the K-Tribe for first place in the Southern Division.

Both starters shrugged off early baserunners as the game stayed scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Holt led off that frame against Dash starter Joe Serafin with a single. Two batters later, Tice hit a 1-1 offering over the wall in center to give the Indians (13-9, 51-40) the lead.

Winston-Salem could manage just three singles the rest of the way against the Indians as the Dash (11-12, 43-50) were shut out for the third time this season. K-Tribe starter Marty Popham (4-0) struck out a career-high 11 batters over 5.2 innings to pick up the win. Serafin (1-8) took the loss despite producing his team-leading eighth quality start of the season. He allowed two runs on five hits and five walks in six innings.

Popham combined with relievers Chris Jones, Trey Haley, Jose Flores, and Preston Guilmet to strike out 17 Winston batters, tying the Dash's season-high. Winston-Salem also struck out 17 times on April 18 against Wilmington. Guilmet earned his 24th save by striking out the side in the ninth inning.

The Dash have been held scoreless in 21 of their last 22 innings and have been held to ten hits over that span.

Winston looks to bounce back on Monday night when LHP Santos Rodriguez (2-2, 3.55) opposes RHP Clayton Cook (6-6, 3.98) in a 6:30 p.m. start. The broadcast of the game begins at 6:15 on www.wsdash.com .

The Dash return home from their longest road trip of the season on Friday night to start a seven-game home stand at BB&T Ballpark. Fans may purchase tickets for every game this season by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or by visiting www.wsdash.com .
