Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Hammerheads have endured a roller-coaster 2013 season, playing through ups (two nine-game win streaks) and downs (0-8 start). But after 133 games, Jupiter's fate has been determined: Playoff bound they are not.

Bradenton's ninth-inning run sealed a 3-2 win over Jupiter Tuesday night, eliminating the Hammerheads from playoff contention one season after winning the Florida State League South Division.

It was a fly ball hit directly to Ryan Goetz in center field that scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Taylor Lewis. Goetz's throw was on the mark, but home plate umpire Rich Gonzalez ruled Dan Gamache safe under the tag of catcher Sharif Othman, dooming Jupiter's desperate hopes for a late-season run.

Ryan Rieger singled to leadoff the bottom of the ninth before Josh Adams grounded into a double-play to effectively end the threat.

Bradenton scored two in the first inning on Hammerheads' starter Jose Urena. Gamache's double to right and Elias Diaz's single to gave the Marauders a 2-0 lead.

Urena worked around the 20-pitch first-inning to allow just three hits over the next six frames.

He tossed seven innings and threw 62 of 96 pitches (65 percent) for strikes. He left with the game tied, and did not factor in the decision.

The 21-year-old Dominican right-hander has allowed 62 earned runs this season - 21 in the first inning (34 percent).

Urena's Tuesday night performance raised his ERA at Roger Dean Stadium to 2.03 in 97.2 innings this season.

His counterpart, Marauders' starter Joely Rodriguez, was just as effective. The left-hander spun seven strong innings of his own, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a pair of walks. He struck out six, and - like Urena - threw 62 of 96 pitches for strikes.

Jupiter's only runs against Rodriguez came on a two-run blast off the bat of Othman in the sixth inning - the Hammerheads' first home run since August 5, more than three weeks ago.

Left-handers in the Hammerheads' lineup combined to go 0-for-7 against Rodriguez, who has held opposing southpaws in the Florida State League to a .169 (11-for-65) batting average.

Acquired in a trade with Arizona in 2010, Rodriguez has pitched fantastically for the Marauders in 67.1 innings since his mid-season promotion from Class-A West Virginia. Including Tuesday night, Rodriguez has held opponents to two earned runs or less in eight of his 12 starts with Bradenton.

Austin Nola went 1-for-2 with a walk from the leadoff spot for Jupiter, raising his on-base percentage against southpaws to a team-best .377.

Ryan Fisher's season-high nine-game hit streak was snapped with a 0-for-4 night.

Adams followed up a 1-for-2 effort in game two Monday night - his first start since August 8 - with two more hits Tuesday night. All three of his hits this series have gone to the opposite field.

With just five games remaining on their regular season schedule, the Hammerheads will look to go out with a bang. They'll host Bradenton tomorrow in the series finale with the Marauders at Roger Dean Stadium. RHP Scott Lyman (3-2, 3.08 ERA) will start for Jupiter. He'll be opposed by LHP Zack Dodson (6-8, 4.61 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
