FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 27, 2013) - The Palm Beach Cardinals swept the Fort Myers Miracle in a doubleheader by scores of 5-4 and 1-0 on Tuesday at Hammond Stadium.
The Cardinals hung on for a wild 5-4 win in extra innings in game 1. The Miracle were on the verge of tying the game in the eighth, but a base running miscue helped the Cardinals walk away with a victory.
With one out and runners on first and third, Jhon Goncalves lifted a fly ball deep to center field that was going to plate Levi Michael from third, but before Michael could touch home and tie the game, Mike Kvasnicka was thrown out by center fielder Charlie Tilson trying to advance to second and the game was ended.
The Cardinals took the lead in their half of the eighth when they loaded the bases with no outs against Zack Jones. Alex Mejia surprised Jones with a squeeze bunt and Jacob Wilson scored the go-ahead run from third when Jones couldn't get a clean grip on the ball and toss it home.
Palm Beach jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Miracle scrapped back into the game. Jesus Montero hit a three-run homer off of starter Matt Tomshaw in the second and Nick Longmire belted a solo homer to start the fourth.
Kvasnicka delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-2. Byron Buxton grounded into a fielder choice to score A.J. Pettersen in the fifth to make it 4-3 Cardinals.
The Miracle tied the game in the seventh. Goncalves lined a single to left field that was misplayed by David Popkins and Goncalves advance all the way to third. One batter later Pettersen lifted a sac fly to score Goncalves and tie the game.
Tomshaw received a no decision. He allowed four runs on four hits in five innings. He walked five and struck out three.
Palm Beach starter Hector Hernandez also took a no decision in five innings of work. He gave up three hits and three runs.
Jones took the loss while Ronnie Shaban got the win.
In game 2, two Cardinals pitchers limited the Miracle to five hits. Starter Joe Cuda pitched five innings of two hit ball. He walked two and struck out five.
Aiden Lucas closed out the game by getting the last six outs to record his second save.
The Cardinals scored the only run of the game on Jonathan Rodriguez's 18th homer of the year, a solo shot off of Manuel Soliman in the second.
Soliman took the tough luck loss. He pitched a complete game and scattered eight hits. He kept the game close in the seventh despite loading the bases with one out by getting a pop out and a ground out to end the threat.
The Miracle and Cardinals will meet for the final time in the regular season on Wednesday at Hammond Stadium at 7:05 p.m. Join the Voice of the Miracle Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald for the broadcast beginning at 6:45 p.m.
