Somerset Patriots News Release
Erie, Penn. - The Somerset Patriots (22-13) had four different pitchers combine to toss a four-hit shutout in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Erie SeaWolves (23-12) at UPMC Park.
Janson Junk (W, 1-1) led the way for Somerset. The right-handed starting pitcher tossed six shutout innings and allowed only three hits and one walk while striking out a career-high nine batters. The six innings of work and his 84 pitches both marked new season highs for Junk.
Kevin Gadea, Ron Marinaccio, and Greg Weissert (SV, 4) each tossed scoreless innings to carry the Patriots through the final three innings of the game.
Offensively, Somerset broke through in the top of the fourth inning on a Michael Beltre run-scoring fielder's choice. Beltre grounded a ball back towards the mound with runners at first and second base, but the SeaWolves failed to complete a double play. On the play, Diego Castillo never stopped running off of second base and came around to score.
The Patriots later got an insurance run from Beltre (2) on a solo home run in the top of the ninth.
Somerset limited Erie to just four hits on the afternoon. The shutout win was the fourth of the season for the Patriots and the team's first since May 29th against New Hampshire.
The Patriots return home on Tuesday night to begin a six-game series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels (San Francisco Giants). First pitch at TD Bank Ballpark is set for 7:05 p.m.
