CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston RiverDogs' first baseman Ben Jones has been named the B.C. Headache Powder Batter of the Week for August 28 - September 4, the South Atlantic League announced Tuesday. Also named to the SAL's Annual All-Star Team this past week, Jones finished his 2006 season on a nine-game hit streak.

The right-hander from Marion, Louisiana batted 16-for-34 (.471) last week with four doubles, a triple, eight runs scored, a home run and 13 runs batted in against Savannah and Columbus.

On Sunday, Sept. 3, Jones went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored and three runs batted in to lead the RiverDogs to a 13-3 rout of Columbus at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The power surge at the end of the season vaulted Jones in to the Charleston professional baseball record book. The 25-year-old ended his second season with the RiverDogs tied for the all-time city career lead in home runs (35) and runs batted in (165).

Jones shares those honors with Wes Bankston (2003-04), a Tampa Bay Devil Rays prospect who also knocked 35 round-trippers as a RiverDog, and Roger Hansen (1981-82), a former Kansas City Royals farmhand, who set the RBI mark. Charleston career records have been kept since the early 1970s.

Jones completed '06 the season with a .298 batting average, ninth in the SAL, 21 home runs, tied for second in the league, and 88 runs batted in, tied for third in the league. His .409 on-base percentage was third-best in the league as was his .530 slugging percentage.

It was the second consecutive season that Jones led the RiverDogs regulars in batting average and RBI. He finished his two-year Charleston career with 251 total hits, sixth-most in Charleston modern-day history, batting .293 during that time, tied for eighth in the city record books with former Charleston Rainbows standout Roberto Alomar.

Jones becomes the second RiverDog to garner a weekly award this season, joining pitcher Wilkins Arias, who took home Pitcher of the Week honors one week ago.
